Agricultural Land Commission

The Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) is an independent provincial agency responsible for administering the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). The ALC decides land use applications related to non-farm activities, subdivision and ALR boundary changes.

BC Oil & Gas Commission

The BC Oil and Gas Commission (BCOGC) is a regulatory agency that was created in 1998 by the Oil and Gas Commission Act. In 2010, the legislation was streamlined into the Oil and Gas Activities Act. The BC Oil and Gas Commission has responsibilities for overseeing oil and gas operations in British Columbia, including exploration, development, pipeline transportation and reclamation. Regulatory responsibility of the BCOGC includes the exploration and development phases, through to facility and pipeline operations and ultimately decommissioning. It is charged with balancing a broad range of environmental, economic and social considerations.

British Columbia Utilities Commission

The British Columbia Utilities Commission is an independent regulatory agency of the provincial government that operates under and administers the Utilities Commission Act. The Commission regulates BC’s natural gas and electricity utilities. The Commission also regulates intra-provincial pipelines and universal compulsory automobile insurance.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency delivers inspection and quarantine programs related to foods, plants and animals in 18 regions and 160 field offices across Canada. Its mandate is to safeguard Canada’s food supply and the plants and animals upon which safe and high-quality food depends.

Canadian Grain Commission

The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) is the regulator of Canada’s grain handling industry. It is also the agency that certifies the quality and quantity of Canadian grain shipments. The CGC protects the rights of Canadian grain producers when they deliver their grain to licensed grain handling companies and grain dealers.

Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) protects the health, safety and security of Canadians as well as the environment, and respects Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy. CNSC staff review applications for licences according to regulatory requirements, make recommendations to the Commission, and enforces compliance with the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, regulations, and any licence conditions imposed by the Commission.

The Environmental Appeal Board is an independent tribunal that hears appeals from certain decisions made by government officials under the Environmental Management Act, Greenhouse Gas Reduction (Cap and Trade) Act, Greenhouse Gas Reduction (Renewable and Low Carbon Fuels) Act, Integrated Pest Management Act, Water Act, and Wildlife Act.

Farm Industry Review Board

The Farm Industry Review Board provides general supervision of marketing boards and commissions; hears appeals from decisions under the Natural Products Marketing (BC) Act, Agricultural Produce Grading Act, and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act; and hears complaints under the Farm Practices Protection (Right to Farm) Act.

Farm Products Council of Canada

The Farm Products Council of Canada mission is to work with its partners to ensure that the supply management and promotion-research systems have the flexibility needed to respond to current and future challenges in a flexible, accountable and transparent manner. The Council supervises national marketing, promotion, and research agencies established under the Farm Products Agencies Act.

Forest Appeals Commission

The Forest Appeals Commission is an independent tribunal that hears appeals of certain decisions made by government agencies under the Forest Act, Forest and Range Practices Act, Private Managed Forest Land Act, Range Act, and Wildfire Act.

Forest Practices Board

The Forest Practices Board considers complaints related to plans for forest use, forest practices, range plans and practices, protection of resources, industry compliance, and government enforcement of the forest practices legislation. It cannot deal with complaints related to private property (except tree farm licenses and woodlots), awarding of licences, or other forest-related legislation. The board makes recommendations for improved practices.

Surface Rights Board of British Columbia

The Surface Rights Board Resolves conflicts between land owners (holders of surface rights) and companies or individuals (holders of sub-surface rights) seeking access to land to explore for, and develop, sub-surface resources including oil and natural gas, minerals, coal, and geothermal resources. It primarily assists in resolving disputes between landowners and companies that require access to private or Crown-owned land.
