Energy Resource Appeal Tribunal (OGAT)

The ERAT is an appellate tribunal established as arms’ length from the government of British Columbia. The ERAT’s role is to consider and decide appeals from certain decisions under the Oil and Gas Activities Act.

ERAT hears appeals of certain decisions issued by the Oil and Gas Commission under the Oil and Gas Activities Act. ERAT has created Notice of Appeal forms. You do not have to use one, but they provide space to fill in all the details you have to provide, in order to start an appeal with the ERAT.

British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC)

Responsible for regulating British Columbia's energy utilities, the Insurance Corporation of BC’s (ICBC) basic automobile insurance rates, common carrier pipelines, and the reliability of the electrical transmission grid. The BCUC is also the administrator of BC’s Fuel Price Transparency Act.

  • reviews questions and complaints from members of the public about the actions of regulated entities

The BCER reviews and determines whether applications for oil and gas activity permits by companies looking to explore, develop, produce, and market oil and gas resources in B.C. should be approved.

The CER reviews energy development projects, shares energy information, and enforces safety and environmental standards

The CER:

  • regulates pipelines, energy development and trade in the Canadian public interest.
  • handles applications and public hearings for companies applying to build a federally regulated pipeline, powerline, or offshore renewable energy project
  • Public hearings allow relevant stakeholders including companies, indigenous communities, interest groups, and individuals affected by a specific proposed project to participate and be consulted in the application process

Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC)

CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect health, safety, security and the environment.

 They also implement Canada’s international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.

The CNSC

  • Implements regulations and by-laws with the approval of the Governor in Council.
  • Orders penalties for lack of compliance with the regulations
  • Makes decisions on the licensing of major nuclear facilities through a public hearing process
